Ecobici in Mexico City: Passes, Prices and How It Works
Mexico City's public bike system covers the central neighborhoods with docking stations, app access and 45-minute trips. What each pass costs and what gets you fined.
Ecobici is Mexico City’s public bike share: you register online, buy a pass and take a bike from any docking station for unlimited trips of up to 45 minutes. As of November 2026, an annual pass costs MXN 588 and a one-day pass MXN 134 at the resident rate, and the system runs from 5:00 to 0:30.
How does Ecobici work?
A pass gives you unlimited rides, each up to 45 minutes, between docking stations (cicloestaciones). You release a bike with the Ecobici app’s QR code or with a linked integrated mobility card (Tarjeta de Movilidad Integrada), the same card used on the Metro. At the end of the ride you push the bike into a free dock until it beeps and the light turns green; a bike that is not properly docked keeps counting time.
Bikes can be taken out from 5:00 until 0:30 the next morning, every day of the year, and returned at any hour. The station map in the app shows how many bikes and free docks each station has. Coverage is concentrated in the central boroughs, so check the map before relying on it for a commute.
How much do Ecobici passes cost?
Prices below are from the Ecobici plans and fares page, VAT included, as of November 2026. The site labels them as prices for Mexico City residents.
| Pass | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Annual | MXN 588 | Unlimited 45-minute rides for a year |
| Annual Ecobici+ | MXN 970 | 90-minute rides on weekends, plus partner discounts |
| Ecobici HSBC annual | MXN 984 | 90-minute rides every day, plus partner discounts |
| 1 day | MXN 134 | Unlimited 45-minute rides for 24 hours |
| 3 days | MXN 263 | Unlimited 45-minute rides for three days |
| 7 days | MXN 441 | Unlimited 45-minute rides for seven days |
Ecobici says foreign users have separate prices and that a membership bought by a foreigner at the national rate can be cancelled without a refund. The link to those prices on its site did not work in November 2026. If you live in Mexico City on a resident card, ask Ecobici’s help line before buying which rate applies to you; visitors should buy at the foreigner rate shown in the app.
Two discounts apply to annual passes: 10% for people over 60 with an INAPAM card, and 10% for students aged 16 to 23 with a valid student ID. Both have to be registered in person at a customer service center.
What happens if you go over the time limit?
Rides longer than the included time are charged to your card. As of November 2026:
- Minutes 46 to 60: MXN 28.
- Each extra hour or fraction after that: MXN 56.
- Keeping a bike for more than 24 hours, or leaving it badly docked: a penalty of MXN 12,450.
- Replacing a lost card: MXN 15.
Users who pay in cash instead of by card must leave a guarantee deposit of MXN 12,450 before taking a bike. To avoid overtime on long trips, dock at any station before the limit and take another bike; each new ride starts its own 45 minutes.
How do you register?
- Download the Ecobici app or open the registration page on the Ecobici website.
- Have an official ID ready. The terms accept a voter card (INE), passport, driver’s license, professional ID, multiple migration form (FMM) or a temporary or permanent resident visa or card.
- Add a Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card issued by a bank and valid for online purchases.
- Choose your pass and link your mobility card if you want to use it at docks.
Riders must be 18 or older. People aged 16 and 17 can join only with a guardian who signs an authorization at a customer center. Each membership is personal; you cannot lend your card or take out a bike for someone else.
The three customer service centers (CAPU) are on the Paseo de la Reforma median opposite Reforma 222, on the Reforma median at Río Guadalquivir, and on Insurgentes Sur between Montecito and Filadelfia. They open Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 19:30 and on weekends from 11:00 to 15:00. The phone line, 55 5005 2424 or 800 3262 421, and WhatsApp at 800 3262 421 answer 24 hours a day.
What traffic rules apply to cyclists?
Mexico City’s traffic regulations (Reglamento de Tránsito) treat cyclists as drivers with their own rights and limits. In the text we checked, last amended in 2019:
- Use bike lanes where they exist, but you may leave them to overtake, turn or avoid an obstruction.
- On streets without bike infrastructure, you may use the full lane.
- Do not ride on sidewalks or in pedestrian areas; only children under 12 and police on bikes may.
- Stay out of lanes reserved for public transport, such as Metrobús lanes, unless signs allow bikes.
- Do not weave between lanes of moving traffic.
- Use lights or reflective bands at night and in poor visibility.
Drivers must give cyclists at least 1.5 meters when passing. Cyclists who break the rules get a verbal warning under that text, while drivers who cut off cyclists face fines and license points. Ecobici’s own terms add penalties for misuse of bikes.
Is Ecobici a good fit for daily commuting?
For short trips inside the central boroughs, often yes. It combines well with the Metro and Metrobús for longer trips; see our guide to the integrated mobility card and fares. On days with a pollution alert, health authorities advise limiting outdoor exercise, which includes cycling; our page on air quality contingencies explains the warnings. New arrivals may also notice the altitude on uphill rides at first.
Bottom line
Register in the app before you need a bike, keep each ride under 45 minutes by re-docking, and check which rate applies to your residency status before buying an annual pass. Save the 24-hour help line in your phone in case a dock fails to lock.
FAQ
Can tourists use Ecobici?
Yes. The terms accept a passport or FMM as ID, and day, three-day and seven-day passes exist. Ecobici says foreign users pay separate prices, so buy the pass the app offers for visitors.
What time does Ecobici close?
You can take bikes from 5:00 until 0:30 the next day. Docks accept returns 24 hours a day, so a late ride can still end at any station.
Do I need a helmet to ride Ecobici?
The traffic regulations we checked do not require adult cyclists to wear a helmet, but they do require lights or reflective bands at night or in poor visibility. Ecobici does not supply helmets, so bring your own if you want one.
What should I do if a bike breaks or I have an accident?
Call Ecobici at 55 5005 2424 or 800 3262 421, which answer around the clock, and report the bike number. In an emergency with injuries, call 911 first.
