Mexico Minimum Wage in 2026: Daily Rates and How It Is Set
The general and border minimum wages for 2026, the 61 trades with their own higher minimum, the rate for household workers, and when the 2027 figures are announced.
Mexico’s general minimum wage for 2026 is MXN 315.04 a day, and MXN 440.87 a day in the Northern Border Free Zone, according to the National Minimum Wage Commission (Comisión Nacional de los Salarios Mínimos, CONASAMI). Mexico City uses the general rate. The figures took effect on January 1, 2026, and stay in force until the 2027 rates replace them.
What is the minimum wage in Mexico in 2026?
Mexico has two geographic areas for the minimum wage. The resolution published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación (DOF) on December 9, 2025 set these daily amounts:
| Area | 2025 daily | 2026 daily | Increase | 2026 monthly (CONASAMI) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General minimum wage zone (includes Mexico City) | MXN 278.80 | MXN 315.04 | 13.0% | MXN 9,582.47 |
| Northern Border Free Zone | MXN 419.88 | MXN 440.87 | 5.0% | MXN 13,409.80 |
The general increase combines a fixed amount of MXN 17.01 that CONASAMI calls the independent recovery amount (monto independiente de recuperación, MIR) and a 6.5% raise. The border zone received a 5% raise with no fixed amount. The monthly figures are CONASAMI’s own conversion of the daily rate.
The border zone covers municipalities along the US border in Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, such as Tijuana, Mexicali, Nogales, Ciudad Juárez, Piedras Negras, Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa and Matamoros. Everywhere else, including all 16 Mexico City boroughs, uses the general rate.
How does CONASAMI set the minimum wage?
The Federal Labor Law (Ley Federal del Trabajo) gives the job to a national commission with worker, employer and government representatives (Article 94). Minimum wages are set every year and take effect on January 1 of the following year (Article 570). The council of representatives normally announces the next year’s figures in December, and the resolution is then published in the DOF.
The law also sets a floor for the increase. Article 90 says the yearly setting or revision of minimum wages can never be below the inflation observed during the period the wage was in force. The commission can review wages mid-year when economic conditions justify it, at the request of the Labor Secretary or of unions or employers representing a majority of workers.
As of early November 2026, the 2027 figures had not been announced. Check the CONASAMI site in December.
What are professional minimum wages?
Besides the general rate, CONASAMI sets higher minimum wages for 61 trades and jobs, raised in 2026 by the same percentage as the general wage in each zone. In the border zone, all but two of them equal the border minimum of MXN 440.87. Some examples for the general zone, which applies in Mexico City:
| Trade (2026) | Daily minimum, general zone |
|---|---|
| Household worker (trabajador del hogar) | MXN 342.47 |
| Pharmacy counter clerk | MXN 321.26 |
| Bricklayer, journeyman | MXN 363.44 |
| Head cook in restaurants and food outlets | MXN 368.05 |
| Auto mechanic, journeyman | MXN 375.35 |
| Assistant secretary | MXN 374.60 |
| Social work technician | MXN 405.82 |
| Print newspaper reporter or photographer | MXN 705.46 (both zones) |
The full list is in CONASAMI’s 2026 table of general and professional minimum wages. In February 2026 the government set up an advisory committee to review whether the list of professions should stay as it is.
What does the minimum wage mean for domestic workers?
People who employ a housekeeper, nanny or cook in Mexico City should start from the household worker minimum of MXN 342.47 a day as of November 2026, not the general wage. The Federal Labor Law says CONASAMI sets that professional wage (Article 335) and that employers must provide food to household workers, plus housing when the worker lives in (Article 334).
Two more points matter for employers. Household workers may be paid by bank transfer only with their consent, and the minimum wage cannot be split by the hour for shifts shorter than the legal maximum day: the CONASAMI table notes that a worker paid by time never receives less than the wage for a full day. Household workers must also be registered with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) under the Social Security Law, and the official rest days in our list of Mexico’s public holidays apply to them as to other employees. A labor lawyer or accountant can confirm the details for your situation.
Is the minimum wage taxed?
Employers do not withhold income tax from workers who earn only the general minimum wage for their area in the month, under Article 96 of the Income Tax Law. Above that, normal withholding rules apply, and social security contributions are a separate matter.
Bottom line
For any job in Mexico City, the floor in 2026 is MXN 315.04 a day, and higher for the 61 listed trades, including MXN 342.47 for household workers.
